An overwhelming beauty in the middle of the ocean.
Do you know landscapes so stunning that your heart begins to beat faster and your eyes are filled with tears? I know. There is a place that both dazzles and intimidates with its beauty. This is a distant point on the map where spectacular views reign. Steep cliffs bend towards the endless ocean, and romantic mountain landscapes overwhelm with austerity. The vegetation delights with its colors and stimulates all the senses. In short, this fairy tale place is the Island of Eternal Spring – Madeira. On the one hand, a paradise in the middle of the Atlantic. On the other hand, however, a golden cage full of secrets you don’t expect.
If you do not believe in God, come to Madeira.
Certainly, then you will understand that the best Architect stands behind the creation of this masterpiece. Although the whole world is a delightful artwork, there are places extremely beloved by Mother Nature. Places whose qualities do not need to be proven, as their beauty simply knocks you off your feet. Splendid and exotic, but also mystical. Where the ocean charms, but also goes crazy with anger and longing for the continent. Here the fog hides houses and their secrets and covers local mountain roads.
During the day fairy-tale laurel forests tempt, in order to scare you at night. Ever-changing weather fascinates and frightens. Undoubtedly, here you will truly feel the power of the elements, and its diversity will make you dizzy. However, instead of jumping into the azure depth and lush vegetation, you will freeze, totally shocked by the view and the energy of this place. You will stand still (with your jaw dropped) and shout with delight. I promise.
Slow down and feel the magic of the island.
Enjoy the view and moment of authentic enchantment. Leave your camera, put your phone away. In fact, taking photos is pointless, as no equipment can capture the depth and atmosphere of this place. Therefore, welcome to Madeira, the bittersweet mysterious island of passion fruit, the kingdom of the ocean and the wind. In other words, in a golden cage in the middle of the Atlantic, on the Island of Eternal Spring.
The Island of Eternal Spring and heaven on earth
First of all, in Madeira, you always head towards the ocean. In essence, it is your inseparable friend and travel companion. Add to it the blinding sun and subtropical lush greenery. Yes, my dear, you are in paradise. So you go to the horizon, admiring the sun-drenched island and sinking in the feeling of bliss. You do not know where to look, as the view is stunning and surprising at every turn. After that, you will enter a tunnel tearing the island, separating the south from the north with a clear line. It’s like walking into a different microclimate and entering Jurassic Park Gate (dinosaurs would fit perfectly in here). Given that, be ready for anything, as you never know how the other side of the island will surprise you.
The south offers a mild climate, lots of sunshine, proximity to the capital and civilization. While the North is the wilderness. Its unstoppable nature and ever-changing weather show another face of paradise. However, the cooler temperatures and changeable, gloomy aura are compensated by the stunning views of the northern coast.
Coming back to Jurassic Park…
I will never forget my first impression of the island when I was unexpectedly “sent to Madeira” one summer day. I admired the splendor of the landscape in disbelief. Endless banana groves, farmland flowing down steep slopes, monstrous plants, and everything in XXL size (apart from the Madeirenses height, unfortunately). Thus, it reminded me of prehistoric vegetation and, therefore, the creatures of those times.
The Island of Eternal Spring in the Atlantic Garden.
Madeira is a volcano forested not only by laurel forests. To illustrate, flowers here have fancy shapes, and the little plants we know climb wildly towards the sky. For instance, the Poinsettia adorning your Christmas table here reaches the level of the second floor. Not to mention picking berries when you need to reach for the branches above your head. Dew runs down the wide leaves of the monstera, and the plants bend under the weight of the flowers.
So that, running an ordinary herbarium in Madeira would be impossible. Basically, the flowers here are so large that they need to be dried between the pages of heavy lexicons, not books. The herbarium itself would have a three-dimensional form instead of a pocket-sized one. The island is alive, green and juicy. As a result, it attracts tourists from all over the world and keeps some of them for longer.
The Island of Eternal Spring and Emotions.
Not for long. To begin with, I hereby confess that Madeira is my old and unfulfilled love. For this Portuguese archipelago, I was ready to leave everything, get on a plane and immerse myself in island life (becoming, for example, a mountain guide). It is a place where I discovered new passions and appreciated the strength and beauty of Mother Nature again. In addition, I overcame my great phobia (Thalassophobia), i.e. the fear of the ocean, which soon became my favorite place. Unfortunately, old love tends to break the heart, and in this case it was not different, but first things first.
The Island of Eternal Spring and Secrets
Madeira slowly began to show its hand and it was only after 18 months that I began to discover its true colors. I realized how does it appear with its harsh landscapes, without touristic splendor and candy-like setting. When the sun is stuck behind the fog for a few weeks, your jeans dry for five days and the clouds fall heavily, it gets unpleasantly, right? As a result, your paradise loses its lightness and heavenly image.
When from a tourist you turn into a local, you start to realize that the smile of the locals has suddenly faded, as well as their warmth. You’re also starting to wonder what about this famous island hospitality and zest for life? As you learn about the island’s history, you will understand and see its limitations as a result. You face Madeira difficulties and begin to feel trapped and dependent on weather conditions. That’s when you start to miss space, freedom, and the mainland.
The most beautiful island according to the World Travel Awards
Undoubtedly, Madeira is one of the most beautiful corners of the world and whoever has visited it at least once returns as soon as possible. It’s a complete and extreme island, and above all, phenomenally beautiful as Madeira and Paradise were created by the same architect. As proof of God’s special interference, here is a beautiful anecdote, proudly conveyed by the Madeirans. Legend has it that God created the earth, took her in his arms, and kissed her, and where he put his lips, Madeira was made. It is hard to find a better incentive.
On the whole, I would like to show you a slightly different face of this heaven on earth. In other words, (my words!) the Island of Eternal Spring is not a place for everyone in the long run. Why so? Above all, check out my entries and get ready for amazing stories!
